History of the library

House history

The old town house, in which the Pirna City Library is located today, was saved from decay through extensive renovation and made accessible to the public through its new use. The history of the building in the old town of Pirna goes back to the founding of the city around 1200 and is closely linked to that of the neighboring Dominican monastery. Oral tradition shows that the northern part of the house was the house of the abbot. To what extent the building belonged to the monastery and for what purpose it was used has not yet been clearly clarified. After evaluating the research, it is assumed that in the phase of the construction of the first massive houses after the founding of the city, two adjacent parcels were built on Dohnaische Gasse and represented the two "core buildings" for the large property to be built later. In the course of the following epochs, more and more was added to the house, so that the two separate “core buildings” were later connected to one another. From the early days of the beginning, today's cellar, Gothic hall and parts of the upper floor have been preserved. The Gothic Hall offers a worthy setting for events of all kinds and is also available for private rental. The richly painted wooden beam ceiling from the period shortly after 1470 is particularly characteristic of this room. The painted wooden beam ceilings on the first floor are also worth seeing, the motifs of which can also be found on the walls. With a little imagination you can imagine the splendor of the rooms in the late 17th century. From the old kitchen of the house only remains of the smoke outlet, the so-called “black kitchen”, are visible in today's stairwell.

Library history

The beginnings of lending libraries in Pirna go back to the early 18th century. In 1714, the mayor and doctor Johann Heinrich Großmann donated his 1,100-volume book collection with a focus on medicine, theology, law, philosophy and history to the church library of the Pirna town church St. Marien . In his will, Großmann established a public library with the foundation and thus laid the foundation for the lending library system in Pirna.

In 1874 the City Association for Inner Mission opened a 200-volume public library, which was moved to the town hall in 1900 and in 1914 with a stock of 1,600 volumes became the property of the city of Pirna. A little later, from 1928, the name “City Library” was introduced and in 1930 the library moved into its new home in a new building instead of the old commercial school. On April 19, 1945, the building of the city library was destroyed in the bombing raid on Pirna, but on October 11 of the same year it was reopened in Breiten Straße 21 with a remaining stock of 3,600 preserved volumes. From April 1950, the new rooms in Klosterstrasse 11c could be moved into. After a children's library was detached in 1954, the name “City and District Library” was used from 1955.

On July 1, 1993, the city of Pirna took over the sponsorship of the city library and 6 years later it opened at Dohnaische Strasse 76, where it is still based today. In 2002 Pirna was not spared from the flood of the century in Saxony. On August 14th Gottleuba and Elbe made their way through the walls and left a picture of devastation. In December of the same year the library was provisionally reopened, despite the many damage caused by the flood, and in August 2008 it was finally reopened. Since January 2005 the Pirna City Library has belonged to the Kultur- und Tourismusgesellschaft Pirna mbH, which was newly founded at that time.

In the Germany-wide ranking of the library index (BIX), the Pirna City Library took 22nd place out of 177 participating libraries in 2009. In 2011, the city library was awarded the Saxon Library Prize for the project sponsorship for toddlers and preschoolers.

Library areas

subject area

The department of the Pirna City Library has around 30,000 media in various subject areas and is located on the first floor of the building. Here you can also find the territorial inventory in separate glass showcases, which can only be borrowed to a limited extent. Information is available at the counter on the first floor, and copies can also be made. There is also the possibility of interlibrary loan if the desired title is not in stock.

Fiction

The second floor holds more than 6,000 volumes of novels and almost 800 audio books. The range of magazines extends from handicraft and women's magazines to men's magazines to current political issues and computer magazines, currently over 100 subscriptions. The daily newspapers are the Pirna edition of the "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Dresdner Latest News", as well as regional press such as "Wochenkurier", "Rundschau" and "Pirnaer Anzeiger".

School library

The areas of youth literature and the new media are spread over the two side wings of the house. Movies on DVD and video, music CDs and DVDs from rock to classic are located in the new glazed side wing. Exactly opposite is the school library in the old side wing with its arcades, which is reflected in the glazed front of the new side wing. Here you will find reference works, literature aids, advice on choosing a career and course of study and lesson-related school literature. In the leisure area, among other things, youth novels and magazines, PC and Wii games are available, as well as a small area with Czech-language literature.

Children's library

The children's library in the attic

In the attic there is a stock of more than 10,000 children's media, including games, CDs and cassettes, videos and DVDs. Parents-to-be will find parenting guides, handicraft books and much more in the integrated parents' library. There is also the possibility of breastfeeding, nappy changing and feeding.

Events and service

A number of events are offered. The reading nights are particularly popular with children, when books are presented through actors (bookslam) and then people spend the night in the library. But literary events such as crime nights and author readings are also very popular with readers, and authors such as Friedrich Schorlemmer and Birgit von Derschau (Kripo live) have been welcomed for lectures. As part of projects to promote language and reading as well as to promote media skills , readings for children of kindergarten and elementary school age as well as library introductions for school classes are offered.
