The Schifftorvorstadt is a historic suburb of Pirna , the district town of the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

geography

The suburb got its name from its location in front of the ship gate, which was razed in the 19th century, part of the city wall around the old town of Pirna . The ship gate stood at today's Steinplatz and was the passage through the Lange Straße.

The Schifftorvorstadt, which lay in the softness of the city of Pirna, is in front of the old town in an easterly direction. The center of the suburb is the plan, a rectangular square. The suburb is located in the narrow valley of the Elbe on the orographic left side, immediately before the stream enters the Elbe basin . The embankment of the Dresden – Děčín railway line separates the district from the immediate banks of the Elbe. South of the Schifftorvorstadt, the terrain rises steeply to the Sonnenstein with the castle of the same name . The Pirna districts of Copitz and Posta are on the opposite side of the Elbe .

history

The Schifftorvorstadt is possibly the oldest still existing part of the inner Pirna city area. There may have been a settlement of Slavic or German boatmen or fishermen there before the planned old town of Pirna was founded . The place was mentioned as early as 1436 when interest was to be paid on a house “in vico dicto Schifftor”. In 1481 a "garden in front of the ship gate" pays interest to the city council of Pirna. Some houses in the suburbs were castle holdings . In 1553 there were 25 houses in the suburb in front of the ship gate .

On the large meadow in front of the ship's gate, already known as “Habe” in the 16th century, was the bird's perch and the shooting house; Whitsun shooting took place there for centuries. The Rohrhaus, mentioned in 1511, was also in the suburbs. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish troops besieged Sonnenstein Fortress in 1639. To this end, they burned the suburbs around the fortress. With the exception of a single house on the Plangasse 6 property, the Schiffvorstadt fell victim to the devastating flames.

In the 19th century, the ship gate was demolished as the Pirna city wall was razed. Nevertheless, the suburb is quiet and far from major thoroughfares.
