Karl Knoblauch

Karl Knoblauch (born June 24, 1921 ) is a former German officer in World War II . He processed his experiences from that time as the author of several books in which he documented the war and the effects on the civilian population.

Life

In 1938 the then 17-year-old entered the military voluntarily. He first attended the Army NCO School in Frankenstein in Silesia. In the following year he came as a non-commissioned officer to the bicycle squadron 195 of the 95th Infantry Division, took part in the campaign against France and helped to "secure the West Wall ". After the French campaign , Knoblauch reported to the Air Force and trained as an observer. He was then deployed with the 4th (F) / 14 long-range reconnaissance squadron in the central section of the Eastern Front. With his Ju-88, Knoblauch experienced the heavy and loss-making missions in the battles around Smolensk, Moscow and Rzhev and the great retreat movements from 1943. He was seriously wounded in a Russian fighter attack and had to leave his squadron. After his recovery in the hospital, Knoblauch reported to the Hermann Göring Parachute Panzer Corps . He was deployed as a platoon leader in the Parachute Armored Fusilier Battalion 2 and experienced the defensive battles around East Prussia in 1944 and 1945. In spring 1945 Knoblauch was wounded again and fled across the thawing lagoon to an air base in Jagel near Schleswig. Here he saw the surrender and the end of the war.

Knoblauch documented the experiences from this time in several books.

After 165 missions, Karl Knoblauch was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and the German Cross in Gold .
