The Neersdommer mill was a water mill (and a manor) on the Niers in Grefrath with an undershot water wheel .

geography

The Neersdommer Mühle is located on the Niers in Niederfeld 13 in the Niederfeld district in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality of Grefrath in the Viersen district . The area on which the mill building is located is approx. 32 m above sea level.

The Niers supplied the Neersdommer mill with water for centuries. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the water and soil association of the Middle Niers, which is based in Grefrath .

history

The existence of the Neersdommer mill emerges from a boundary description from 1348. In a document from 1354 one then learns that the mill belonged to the Duke of Geldern . This sold the mill to his liege Johan von Honselaer. In 1522 the Neersdommer mill came to the Archbishopric of Cologne . In the years that followed, the mill only awarded this in a time lease. After the confiscation by the French state , Peter Heinrich Stieger bought the property. The mill was of great importance with its four grinders , especially as it could be operated 24 hours a day. At the end of the 19th century the mills went downhill. The last heiress of the estate and mill Johanna Stieger bequeathed the entire property to the Benedictines in the period 1899/1904 . The grinding operation as well as the generation of electricity and its use for irrigation were finally stopped in 1942.
