The Mühlrather mill in the municipality of Schwalmtal is a water mill with two undershot water wheels.
geography
The Mühlrather Mühle is located on the right-hand side on the middle course of the Schwalm below Brempt, on the outflow of the Hariksee in the municipality of Schwalmtal in the Viersen district . Above is the Brempter Mühle , below was the Frankenmühle . The water level is 44 m above sea level.
history
Below Brempt on the former Geldrischen side is the Mühlrather Hof, which belonged to the Elmpter estate . The Mühlrath Mill, first mentioned in a document in 1447, is located on the Jülich side. It belonged to the Clee house in Burgwaldniel . In 1590 the mill was rebuilt by Werner von Ketzgen and his wife Magdalena and registered under the name "Mulrader Meulen". Later both properties, which were only separated by the Schwalm, were in one hand. The mill was operated as a grinding and oil mill. A meal was compulsory for the village of Dilkrath and part of Amern St. Georg .
The mill is the only one on the Schwalm that has two water wheels , one made of wood, the second was built in 1905 from iron. In 1937 the milling operation was stopped. Until 1960 the mill was still operated as a sawmill . Since that time, the Mühlrath mill has been used as an excursion restaurant and restaurant on Lake Harik. The iron wheel has been an electrical generator for generating electricity since 1995 . The wooden wheel was renewed true to the original in 2002.

The two-storey water mill with a rear entrance facade in five axes with a stone portal , wooden walls and crooked hip roof was built around 1800. The mill wheels have been preserved. The entry is limited to the maintenance of the mill building with the mill wheel and the barn opposite.
