history
The St. Pantaleon Abbey in Cologne is mentioned as the owner of the Borner Mühle as early as the 12th century. An important documentary mention can be found in the “Borner Weistum” of September 17, 1412. Here it says that all Laaten (leaning supporters) of the Cologne Abbey “St. Pantaleon ”, who were based in Born and Bracht , had to have their grain milled in the Borner mill. This compulsory meal of the abbey was handled with particular severity so that the miller was able to pay the high taxes to the abbey.
Interesting is a contract of inheritance from 1552, with which the mill was awarded to the married couple Dietrich von Kestenich and Adelheid von Dilkrath. In the contract, the object is referred to as a grain, oil, fulling and tan mill. The mill was operated at times with three water wheels, one of which was built over in 1912 for winter operation. During the French rule , the mill was confiscated and sold with the entire monastery property in 1812 . The mill operation was stopped in 1960. On December 23, 1976, a fire destroyed the roof and most of the facility. In 1980 the Borner Mühle reopened as a hotel and restaurant . On March 11, 1985, the Borner mill was entered in the list of monuments under No. 19. The restaurant and hotel closed in February 2014.
