Langendonker Mill (Grefrath)

The Langendonker mill has its location on the left, formerly Guelders side of the Niers in Tetendonk the district Vinkrath in the North Rhine-Westphalian municipality Grefrath in Viersen . The area on which the mill building is located is approx. 30 m above sea level.

The Niers in its old river bed supplied the Langendonker Mühle with water for centuries until regulation in 1927. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the water and soil association of the Middle Niers, which is based in Grefrath .

The Langendonker Mühle was leased by Duke Reinald von Geldern and his brother to Godert von Wachtendonk in 1353, presumably on a long lease. His descendants remained in the possession of the sovereign mill until around 1700 . The mill ban for the Grefrath area was on the mill . Because of the rent , but especially because of the use of water power and the right to dam , there were several disputes and official orders in the 18th century. The conventional oil and grinding mill was converted to grind tobacco leaves around 1770. The Krefeld merchant Abraham von der Westen, who owned the mill since 1771, ran a snuff production . From 1841 it became a grain and oil mill again. Two covered water wheels drove the mill. From 1870 on, an 8 HP steam engine was also put into operation. With the Niersregulierung in 1927 the mill operation was stopped.
