The Neersen castle mill was a water mill on the Niers in Willich with an undershot water wheel .
geography
The castle mill was located on the Niers in Hauptstrasse in the Neersen district of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Willich in the Viersen district. The area on which the mill building once stood is approx. 39 m above sea level.
The Niers in their changed river bed supplied the Neersen castle mill with water for centuries. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the water and soil association of the Middle Niers, which is based in Grefrath .
history
The Neersen castle mill is mentioned for the first time in a Heinsberg deed of mortgage in the 14th century . There is talk of a "molendium ante castum - mill in front of the castle". Under French administration, the castle and mill were sold to private hands. However, it wasn't until 1903 when the owner shut down the mill and turned it into a hydropower-operated power station in order to generate electricity for his private needs. It was not until 1930 that the mill was set up as a residential building, which is still standing today in a modernized form.
From around 1600 an oil mill also belonged to the castle. It was also on the main road, but a little further north. A ditch had been dug around the castle for them. However, it was not fed by the Niers, but by the Cloer , a small tributary. The oil mill does not seem to have been of great importance. In 1765 it was canceled. From then on, the necessary oil was struck in the castle mill.
