Karl Marx (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Marx (born January 21, 1929 in Cologne ; † December 27, 2008 there ) was a German painter and until 1986 art professor at the TH Cologne .

Life

Even as a high school student, Karl Marx had to produce decorative painting and applied graphics for his father, a decorator who also painted and was “leftist” in terms of his political views, which almost drove him out of his love for art. Under his name he often suffered badly during the National Socialist era . But it was also his father who encouraged him in his art plans. From 1946 he studied free painting for ten semesters at the Cologne Werkschulen , among others with Friedrich Vordemberge , was appointed a master class student and then initially worked as a freelancer in the Rhineland.

In 1959 he was appointed lecturer at the Cologne factory schools and later appointed professor for painting. In 1971 the Werkschulen became part of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , and from 1975 onwards, Marx was the uninterrupted dean of the art and design department. He finished his university service in 1993 when the Fine Art course was discontinued with the establishment of the Cologne Academy of Media Arts .

Marx worked rather withdrawn, without public attention. He attached great importance to promoting and advising his students:

"In my opinion, teaching about how art should be is not possible at all, since there is no job description of an artist, it can never be about 'training', but at most about 'forming a personality', who is able to react sensitively to environmental influences. "

Marx died in 2008 at the age of 79. His grave is located in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (Hall 8 (R1)).

In the course of time, Marx moved away from his expressionist roots and developed his own “neo-Fauvist” style, thus becoming one of the pioneers of the Neue Wilden in Cologne. The central motif in his stirring paintings is the representation of human bodies between pleasure and suffering, in taboo-free directness and brutality shown in detail.

From 2005 to 2008 Marx worked on a huge cycle of numerous paintings, drawings and collages on Théodore Géricault's masterpiece The Raft of Medusa . The Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn had already exhibited a selection of these from January to April 2009, after a major retrospective under the title Karl Marx. Early pictures from the years 1951 to 1981 had been shown in Bonn.

The cultural heritage of Karl Marx is the archive for artists discounts of Brauweiler Abbey managed.
