Karl Philipp Schmitt (* 1826 in Darmstadt ; † November 15, 1909 ibid) was a German musician and founder of the Academy for Tonkunst (Darmstadt) .

Life

Karl Philipp Schmitt was born in 1826 as the son of the concert master of the Darmstadt court orchestra Wilhelm Casimir Schmitt (1802 / 3-1834) and the concert pianist Henriette Schmitt. He received musical training at an early age and became a violinist at the grand ducal court orchestra in Darmstadt.

On September 1, 1851, with the support of his mother, Philipp Karl Schmitt founded a private music school in Darmstadt, which was named Philipp Schmittsche Akademie für Tonkunst from 1878. The academy's first location was the parents' apartment on Schützenstrasse in the Paulusviertel (Darmstadt) . Schmitt introduced a new teaching concept and his academy was very successful from the start. In the first year he had 16 students. The number rose to 160 students in 1869.

As early as 1858, his students appeared in public concerts.

The academy moved several times in the following years. From 1857 it was located on Elisabethenstraße and in 1862 on Grafenstraße. On September 22, 1906, the new building for the Philipp Schmitt Academy of Music was inaugurated on Waldstrasse (later Adelungstrasse) in Darmstadt.

In August 1922, the Academy of Music was taken over by the city of Darmstadt.

Philipp Karl Schmitt died in November 1909 at the age of 83.
