Karl Purgold

Karl Purgold (born December 28, 1850 in Gotha , † 1939 ibid) was a German classical archaeologist and art historian .

Karl Purgold came from an old Gotha family. His grandfather Carl Purgold (1778-1851) had been the city's mayor. Karl Purgold received his doctorate from the University of Munich under Heinrich Brunn in 1878 . From 1878 to 1880 he was able to travel in the Mediterranean area with the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute . He took part in the excavations at Olympia and was involved with Wilhelm Dittenberger in the publication of the inscriptions found there. From 1890 until his retirement in 1934 he was director of the Ducal Museum in Gotha .
