Karl Suessdorf

Karl Suessdorf (born April 28, 1911 in Valdez, Alaska , † February 1, 1982 in Riverside, California ) was an American composer and songwriter.

Karl Suessdorf's best-known work is the jazz standard Moonlight in Vermont , for which he wrote the music and John Blackburn the text. The piece was popularized in 1944 by Margaret Whiting , whose signature song it became. Together with Blackburn, Suessdorf also wrote the piece I Wish I Knew . Suessdorf also wrote the music for the piece Susquehanna , known in the recording by Oscar Peterson .

He also collaborated with lyricists Leah Worth and Lloyd Sloan on the song Did Anyone Ever Tell You, Mrs. Murphy ; Perry Como recorded the piece in 1949.

Suessdorf and Worth also contributed the text to the 1948 piece Key Largo composed by Benny Carter . In addition to the composer Benny Carter himself, this standard was also recorded by Sarah Vaughan , Marian McPartland , Ira Sullivan , Ella Fitzgerald , Chris Connor and Carmen Lundy .
