Karl Thäter (zoologist)

Karl Thäter (born February 15, 1886 in Nuremberg ; † June 19, 1946 there ) was a German zoologist .

Life

After attending grammar school in Nuremberg, Karl Thäter studied natural sciences at the universities of Erlangen and Würzburg. In 1906 he became a member of the Corps Bavaria in Erlangen . In 1909 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. After he had also passed the teaching examination, he became a senior teacher at the girls' school in Bonn in 1910. At the same time, he practically continued his education in the zoos in Cologne and Dresden.

November 1911, Thäter was elected the first and only director of the first Nuremberg zoo at Luitpoldhain and continued his education in the zoos in Hamburg and Breslau until its opening in May 1912. He was decisive for its scientific, planning and organizational design. In 1939 he became the first director of the second Nuremberg zoo, which still exists today, at Schmausenbuck, in which he created the open-air enclosure without bars. In 1945 he retired from active service.

The perpetrator was active in the publication of the Tiergarten magazine and the Tiergarten guide . He wrote numerous articles in journals and daily newspapers and gave regular public lectures. Study trips took him to Belgium, Holland, Italy and Austria.

Awards

In 1962 a street in the Mögeldorf district of Nuremberg was named after Karl Thäter.
