Karl Vondal (born April 6, 1953 in Obersiebenbrunn , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian visual artist . His oeuvre is primarily received within the controversial art-historical categorization Art brut .

Large-format, collage-like works on paper form the core of Karl Vondal's work. The artist creates these by joining different paper formats, which he processes in pastel shades with pencil, colored pencils, Indian ink and acrylic paints. The woman and erotic subjects are thematic focal points as well as the formulation of dreams and longings, for example for strange places or interpersonal closeness. Vondal's works of drawing, painting and assemblage are supplemented with text elements of various dimensions, which deepen and expand the level of content of what is depicted.

Biography and artistic career

Karl Vondal grew up as the youngest child in an extended family. After completing compulsory schooling, Vondal began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and worked as a laborer. At the age of 19, his first stay in what was then the “ Gugging Sanatorium ” took place. Due to a chronic illness, stays in various psychiatric facilities follow. In the 1980s, Gugging recognized his artistic talent. The first work is documented from 1988. In 2002 Karl Vondal moved to the House of Artists , part of the Art / Brut Center Gugging , Maria Gugging . Vondal currently lives in the House of Artists and works both there and in the open studio of the Art / Brut Center Gugging. His works are part of international collections and exhibitions.
