Karl X Gustafs mur
The Karl X Gustafs mur (dt .: wall Charles X Gustav) is one of limestone erected wall , the transversely across the south end of the Swedish Baltic Sea island Öland runs.
The wall was erected in 1653 and is named after the later King of Sweden, Karl X. Gustav . It stretches from the bank of Kalmarsund , starting south of Grönhögen , in an easterly direction straight across Öland, until it reaches the shore of the Baltic Sea after about five kilometers. Today it is only interrupted by the passages for two country roads, but otherwise preserved.
The purpose of the wall was to keep the red deer kept in the southern part of the island in the area of the Ottenby royal estate in order to secure a high game population in the royal hunting ground. In addition, it is also assigned the function of a prestige object in the sense of a demonstration of royal power.
There was a similar wall, the hunting wall, on the northern tip of Öland.
