history

The agricultural estate Karlshof was founded between 1779 and 1804 by Minister of State Carl Ludwig Freiherr von Barkhaus called Wiesenhütten and laid out as an English-style dairy . In addition to the farm buildings, the facility also included a garden restaurant popular with Darmstadt residents. In the first few years after it was founded, the estate was run by administrators, and from 1839 the estate was leased. Due to the lack of male descendants, the property fell into the possession of the Oetinger family, who built a castle-like villa there in 1898. The farm was only slightly damaged in the Second World War . In 1960 the city of Darmstadt acquired the area. The city continued the agricultural business until 1966. In the following years, all buildings, except for the house known today as the Oetinger Villa, were demolished.

In 1975 the construction of a student residence began with three groups of buildings for the apartments and a low-rise building for communal use. The opening was in August 1978. On the northern part of the site, several three- to four-story apartment blocks were built in the 1980s (living in the park). In November 2012 the construction of a family house with 43 dormitory spaces for students with children began (completion summer 2013)

description

The student dormitory with 4 building sections, managed by the Darmstadt Student Union, is now located on the largest part of the former agricultural area in Darmstadt-Martinsviertel . With a total of 232 apartments for almost 1000 students, it is the largest student residence in Darmstadt. As a model, the concept of shared apartments was first implemented in the student residence in the 1970s . The size of the residential groups today varies between two and six people per unit. There are also some handicapped accessible apartments, family apartments and an affiliated daycare center. The Karlshof dormitory is one of the locations for the film 13 semesters .

The Oetinger Villa , which is now a self-administered youth and cultural center, and four residential buildings “Wohnen am Park” are also on the site.
