Carmel

Karmel (Hebrew kerem-el , "vineyard of God"; English Carmel ) is a Jewish settlement in the West Bank with 401 inhabitants (2016). In 1994, Carmel had 231 residents. The settlement was founded in 1981 and is located in the Hebron region . The plans for the Israeli barriers up to February 2005 provided that the location would be on the Israeli side due to the course of the barriers. Since February 2005 it is planned that the place should be on the Palestinian side. The settlement is located two kilometers northeast of the Jewish settlement Ma'on and seven kilometers east of the Palestinian town of Yatta .

The place is also attested in the Tanach :

  • Josh 15.55: In one of Judas' cities, Carmel appears next to Ma'on .
  • 1Sam 15.12: Saul erects a victory sign / monument in Carmel.
  • 1Sam 25.2.5.7.40: In Carmel, Nabal and his wife Abigajil have his farm, and he himself lives in the neighboring settlement of Ma'on . He refuses David's people a requested support, whereupon David wants to kill Nabal and his people. Abigajil knows how to prevent this through generous gifts. Ten days later, God kills Nabal and David takes Abigail as his wife.
