Yatta ( Arabic يطا, DMG Yaṭṭā ) is a city within the Hebron Governorate of the Palestinian Authority or the State of Palestine . It is located in the south of the West Bank . Yatta is located on a hill and has been identified with the location of the ancient biblical city of Jutta.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the city had 63,511 inhabitants as of mid-2017. By 2020 this number rose to 68,100 inhabitants.
history
In 1931 a Jewish grave complex from the 2nd century AD was found in the city. Many residents may be descended from Jewish-Arab tribes. Like the rest of Palestine, Yatta was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire in 1517 and came under British mandate rule after the First World War . After the Palestine War in 1948 , it became part of Jordan .
Since the Six Day War in 1967, Yatta has been under Israeli occupation along with the rest of the West Bank. Since September 1995, Yatta and its immediate region, now known as Area A, have been under the administration of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
On September 17, 2001, a Jewish terrorist group, the Bat Ayin, planted two bombs in the school yard in Yatta: one was supposed to explode during recess and a second bomb a few minutes later in the expectation that teachers and students would come to do the damage examine. A malfunction led to the fact that the first bomb exploded earlier and the Israeli specialists managed to defuse the second bomb in time.
At least seven Palestinians were killed in Yatta during the Second Intifada in various incidents from 2002 to 2004. On March 8, 2012, Israeli soldiers shot dead 20-year-old Zakariya Abu Eram and injured two others in a raid in the city to arrest Abu Eram's uncle Khaled Mahamra, a member of Hamas , who was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment and later im Was released as part of a prisoner exchange against the captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit .
