The Hebron Governorate or al-Khalil ( Arabic محافظة الخليل, DMG Muḥāfaẓat al-Ḫalīl ) is a governorate of the Palestinian Authority or the State of Palestine . It is located in the south of the West Bank and is the largest of the 16 governorates of Palestine by area and population. The district capital or Muhfaza (seat) is the city of Hebron .
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the governorate had 711,223 inhabitants as of mid-2017. By 2020 this number rose to 762,541 inhabitants.
Demographics
The population is on average very young and around 41.4 percent are younger than 15, while only 2.6 percent are over 65 years old. In 2017, 100 percent of the population was Muslim . Residents of Jewish settlements were not included. 53.9 percent of the total population were refugees or displaced persons in the same year.
