The Bethlehem Governorate ( Arabic محافظة أريحا, DMG Muḥāfaẓat Arīḥā ) is a governorate of the Palestinian Authority or the State of Palestine . It is located in the eastern areas of the West Bank , which borders Jordan . The governorate extends west to the mountains east of Ramallah and the eastern slopes of Jerusalem , including the northern reaches of the Judean Desert . The district capital or Muhfaza (seat) is the city of Jericho .
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the governorate had 50,002 inhabitants as of mid-2017. By 2020 this number rose to 52,355 inhabitants.
Demographics
The population is on average very young and around 37.2 percent are younger than 15 years, while only 3.3 percent are over 65 years old. In 2017, 99.4 percent of the population were Muslim and 0.6 percent were Christian or otherwise. Residents of Jewish settlements were not included. 69.4 percent of the total population were refugees in the same year.

economy
Agriculture is important to the economy in the governorate, especially in the valley near the capital, Jericho. Jericho is often considered the oldest inhabited settlement in the world. The many historical and archaeological sites attract numerous tourists to the region.
