The Jenin Governorate ( Arabic محافظة جنين, DMG Muḥāfaẓat Ǧanīn ) is a governorate of the Palestinian Authority or the State of Palestine . It is located in the north of the West Bank . It is the only governorate in the West Bank where the majority of the country is under the Palestinian Authority. Four Israeli settlements were evacuated as part of Israel's unilateral disengagement plan in 2005. The district capital or Muhfaza (seat) is the city of Jenin .
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the governorate had 314,866 inhabitants as of mid-2017. By 2020 this number rose to 332,050 inhabitants.
Demographics
The population is on average very young and around 37.2 percent are younger than 15 years, while only 3.4 percent are over 65 years old. In 2017, 98.3 percent of the population were Muslim and 1.6 percent were Christian or otherwise. Residents of Jewish settlements were not included. 59.6 percent of the total population were refugees in the same year.
