history

According to the Bible, Halhul was a city in the tribal area of Judah , which was located in the hill country near Beth Zur . The biblical scholar Edward Robinson identified the modern city with the place Halhul mentioned in the book of Joshua . John Kitto noted that the modern name is identical to the one given in Hebrew in the Bible , so the name has remained unchanged for over 3,300 years.

Halhul was born along with Jerusalem and the Temple of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II during his invasion of the Kingdom of Judah in 587 BC. Chr. Destroyed. The city is mentioned again in chronicles of the battles between the Seleucid Empire and the Ptolemaic Empire . It was fortified by Judas Maccabeus after his victory in the battle of Beth Zur nearby.

The city later fell under the rule of the Kingdom of Jerusalem , the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire . Since the Six Day War in 1967, Halhul has been under Israeli occupation along with the rest of the West Bank. Since September 1995, Halhul and its immediate region, now known as Area A, have been under the administration of the Palestinian Authority. During the Second Intifada, Israel confiscated land in Halhul.
