Potato masher

Potato masher are simple kitchen tools for crushing soft-boiled potatoes , other vegetables or fruit . They consist of a vertical handle with an upper handle and a lower, horizontal plate made of perforated sheet metal or a sturdy wire mesh. There is also a variant made entirely of wood consisting of a cylinder with a handle attached to a hole.

The similarly shaped stick grenades were therefore nicknamed "potato masher" by the German Wehrmacht .

Modern metal potato masher

Potato masher are used to make mashed potatoes , baby food , applesauce and the like. In recent times they have often been replaced by kitchen mixers, which, however, are less gentle with the ingredients due to their high speed. Alternatives to the potato masher are the potato press and Flotte Lotte .
