Fleet Lotte

Passing device

A fleet Lotte (including food mill , vegetable mill , strainer , Passevite or Passe Tout ) (Switzerland: only Passevite ) is a manually operated kitchen appliance that the passing of fruits , vegetables or other foods used.

Layout and function

The device consists of a sieve-like , usually slightly sloping base, over which a shaft with rotor-like blades is attached. The leaves are placed at an angle, that is, one of their edges is at the bottom of the sieve and the other is upwards. Using a crank , the leaves can be set in a rotary motion and, due to their inclination, press the food placed in the device through the sieve base: juice or porridge will drip or fall through the sieve, depending on the food passed through and the fineness of the sieve . Solid constituents (such as shells, kernels) remain in the sieve. If they stick to the sieve, you can loosen the residue by turning the crank of the device backwards so that the leaves come off the sieve.

With some devices, the bottom sieve can be changed and the fineness can be varied. The “Flotte Lotte” is used to make applesauce , sauces, vegetable puree, baby food, jam and fruit juice. In French cuisine it is also used to prepare various soups (or potage ), in Swabian cuisine it can be used to make spaetzle .

The passage cradle is a simpler device with a comparable function .

Patent drawing in Belgian patent specification No. 348610, filed February 14, 1928 by Victor Simon

history

On February 14, 1928, Victor Simon received patent number 348610 for this device in Belgium, which he called “Passoire d'action rapide pour légumes et autres comestibles” .

On February 16, 1931, Jean Mantelet applied for a patent in Paris for a “press purée qui, sous l'action d'une lame hélicoïdale animée par une manivelle, comprime progressivement la matière contre un tamis conique” . Mantelet successfully marketed his device first under the name Moulin-Légumes , later Légumex and finally, from 1957, Moulinex  - the name that his company Moulinex also adopted. At times up to two million of these press purée were produced there annually .

In the 1930s, a food strainer was manufactured by Charlotte Giebel. The vernacular made "Flotte Lotte" out of it.

In Germany, the Lotte fleet has been manufactured by the GEFU company since around 1950, almost unchanged in different versions. The product name Flotte Lotte became colloquially a generic name in Germany , but it is a protected trademark of GEFU Küchenboss .
