Ficksburg is a town in the Setsoto municipality , Thabo Mofutsanyana District , Free State Province in South Africa . In 2011 the city had 5400 inhabitants. The neighboring township of Meqheleng had 35,848 inhabitants. Ficksburg is located at the foot of the 1,854 meter high Mpharane Mountain on the state border with Lesotho , about 55 kilometers north-northeast of its capital Maseru . Most of the residents work in agriculture. The region around Ficksburg is the largest producer of cherries in South Africa. Also, grain , potatoes and vegetables asparagus are grown here. The manufacture of dairy products also plays a major role.
history
The city was founded in 1891 by the Boer general Johan Fick , who won the area in the Seqiti War with the Basotho . Charles Robberts Swart , the first President of the Republic of South Africa from 1961, was imprisoned in Ficksburg by the British during the Second Boer War and only released one day before his planned execution . Many homes on the farms that surrounded the city were burned down by the British as part of the scorched earth tactic during the Boer War .
