The kasbah of the Algerian capital Algiers is in the narrower sense a castle ( kasbah ) from the 16th century, in a broader sense it describes the old town of Algiers, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992 .

description

The old town ( Kasbah ), which was mainly built during the Ottoman period and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site , has many winding streets. There are numerous mosques, as well as many palaces from Moorish times and the citadel from the 16th century. The oldest mosque is the Great Mosque (Jamaa el Kebir) on Rue de la Marine from 1324, which was renovated in 1794 and whose origins go back to the 11th century. The 17th century New Mosque (Jamaa el Jedid) is shaped like a Greek cross. Also worth mentioning are the Ketchaoua Mosque from 1794 and the Sidi Abdarahman Mosque, which is named after the patron saint of Algiers.
