The old AOK main administration building (name according to the list of monuments : Kasernenstrasse 63, Altbau AOK ) is a listed building on Kasernenstrasse in Düsseldorf , which was built from March 1904 to February 1905 by the architect Hermann vom Endt in the material style of reform architecture with economical Art Nouveau decor. It is “an example of an administration building from the early 20th century”.

history

The baroque district around the barracks was demolished for the large banks and administrations of the steel industry. In order to politically enforce the project and to compensate for the fact that a “significant piece of old Düsseldorf was sacrificed”, the city made “offers of acceptance on building policy” to the population. Schools, a theater, the synagogue and the AOK building were built. The AOK building was originally built for the metal workers' health insurance company.

Since the building was directly adjacent to the Great Synagogue , a contract with the Israelite Community stipulated that the height of the building should be limited to four floors.

description

The building has four floors. The facade is divided vertically into three axes on the ground floor. The facade of the upper floors is divided into five axes. Of the five axes on the third floor, three axes are combined by a temple front, over the entablature of which the inscription "Ortskrankenkasse" can be read. The temple front is flanked on both sides by loggias .

The stone facade is heavily embossed . The base is made of granite, the facade of Palatinate sandstone. The main entrance is on the central axis, flanked by large shop windows on the right and left. A two-story bay window dominates the central axis of the two upper floors. Strong, stone window crosses mark the skylights of the triple windows. The three middle window parapets on the second floor are adorned with Art Nouveau decor. The top floor shows a triangular gable with three small windows.
