(Johann) Kaspar Memberger the Elder (* approx. 1555; † approx. 1618 in Konstanz ) was court painter to Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau from 1593 to 1598 .

Life

Johann Caspar Memberger was a son of the painter Philipp Memberger. Although only a few works by him are known, he is considered an important representative of southern German mannerism. His earliest known work is a book illustration signed “CM” from 1569, which was commissioned by Mark Sittich von Hohenems , Bishop of Konstanz. Memberger traveled to Rome in 1579 with Bishop Markus Sitticus von Hohenems. There he was busy decorating the Palazzo Altemps, the cardinal's Roman residence. A Madonna in the Studiolo of the Palazzo Altemps previously attributed to Vitruvio Alberi is likely to be a fresco by Memberger.

In 1588 Memberger was appointed court painter to Prince-Bishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had probably met him in Rome from his uncle Markus Sitticus von Hohenems. Memberger's early works in Salzburg include a five-part cycle about the Flood, which he made for Wolf Dietrich in 1588. Comparisons with works by the Bassano family show that Memberger was familiar with their works. Memberger's portrait of Raitenauer reveals that the artist was also familiar with Roman and Florentine portrait painting. In 1598 he returned to Constance, where he worked at least until 1616. A cycle of 15 panel paintings in the Christ Church in Constance with scenes on the rosary also comes from him.

Membergerstrasse in Salzburg is named after him.
