The Kassena-Nankana District was a district in the Upper East Region of Ghana and on the border with the neighboring state of Burkina Faso . The district was divided into two new districts: the Kassena Nankana Municipal District and the Kassena Nankana West District .

population

The population of the district has hardly increased since 1984, as there is a significant migration towards the southern parts of Ghana. In addition to this permanent emigration, there is a pronounced seasonal migration of shepherds southwards during the dry season. These then return during the wetter season and work on local fields. There is a certain amount of immigration - mostly but also only seasonal - into the district from the north of Burkina Faso.

Ethnically the population of the district consists of members of the Gur- speaking peoples of the Kassena , Nankana and Builsa .

Climate and vegetation

The climate is tropical with a wet season from May to October and a long dry season with practically no rainfall from October to April. Temperatures range between a maximum of 45 ° in March / April and a minimum of 12 ° in December.

Characteristic is the hot harmattan that blows during the dry season.

economy

The district is dominated by agriculture. There are corn , sorghum , millet , peanuts and rice grown. Livestock breeding plays an important role.
