Former districts of Ghana

Several former districts of Ghana have been divided into two new districts since 1988:

Berekum-Jaman District
The Berekum-Jaman District was a district in the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana and was the first district to be split up in 1989, creating the Berekum District and the Jaman District .
Jaman District
The resulting Jaman District was again divided on November 12, 2003 by decree of President John Agyekum Kufuor into the districts of Jaman South District and Jaman North District . The Jaman District had about 147,000 inhabitants at that time, the capital being Drobo .
Sekyere District
The Sekyere District in the Ashanti Region was divided into the districts of Sekyere West District and Sekyere East District by decree by President Jerry Rawlings in 1988 .
Asunafo District
The Asunafo District was part of the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana. It was divided into the districts of Asunafo South District and Asunafo North District on November 12, 2003 by decree of President John Agyekum Kufuor . Asanufo District had 171,000 inhabitants in 2002, the capital being Goaso .
Atebubu District
The Atebubu District was also a district of the Brong Ahafo Region and was first divided into the new Atebubu District and the Sene District that still exists today in 1988 . On November 12, 2003, the new and smaller district of Atebubu was divided into the districts of Atebubu-Amantin District and Pru District by decree of President John Agyekum Kufuor .
Kintampo District
With the Kintampo District, another district of the Brong Ahafo Region was divided up on November 12, 2003 by decree of President John Agyekum Kufuor and the districts Kintampo South District and Kintampo North District emerged. The Kintampo District had about 161,000 inhabitants at that time, the capital was Kintampo .
Adansi West District
Was dissolved on November 12, 2003 into the new districts of Adansi North District and Adansi South District and Obuasi Municipal District .
Assin District
Was dissolved on November 12, 2003 into the new districts of Assin North District and Assin South District .
Ga District
Was dissolved on November 12, 2003 into the new districts of Ga West District and Ga East District .
Wassa / Fiase / Mpohor District
was split in 1988 into Mpohor Wassa East District and (?)
Juaboso-Bia District
was divided into Bia District and Juaboso District
Atwima District
was dissolved on November 12, 2003 and divided into the districts of Atwima Nwabiagya and Atwima Mponua .
Gomoa / Awutu / Effutu / Senya District
was split in 1988 into the Gomoa District and the Awutu / Effutu / Senya District
Ahafo District
In 1988 it was divided into the districts of Ahafo Ano North , Ahafo Ano South , and Asutifi .
Wenchi District
Today's Tain District was split off from the former Wenchi District by decree of November 12, 2003 . The south-western parts of the former district continued to be referred to as the Wenchi District.
Tano District
From the former Tano district, the two new districts Tano North and Tano South were formed by decree of November 12, 2003 .
Denkyira District
From the former Denkyira District, the Lower Denkyira District (also: Twifo / Heman / Lower Denkyira District) and Upper Denkyira District were formed by decree from 1988 .
Breman-Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District
former district in the Central Region of Ghana, was founded in 1989 a. a. dissolved in the Asikuma / Odoben / Brakwa District .
Birim District
former district in the Eastern Region of Ghana, was divided into the two districts of Birim North and Birim South in 1989 .
