The Birim North District is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana . Chief executive of the 1,237 km² district with 122,513 (2002) inhabitants is Emmanuel NA Frimpong . District capital is New Abirem .

The district was only formed from the Birim District in 1988 through division.

In the village of Akrofunso near Afosu is an ancient theater of the Ashanti Wars. The famous Ashanti king Osei Tutu is said to have been killed here.

The highest point in the district is 800 meters. The main drainage systems are the Pra and Birim rivers , as well as the smaller Afotosu and Mamang rivers . Gold deposits and clay mining sites have already been discovered in the district's soils. So far, nine forest reserves have been created in the entire district on a total area of ​​1,018.9 km².

population

An estimated 151,401 people lived in the district in 2006. This estimate is based on an assumed population growth of 3.4 percent, which has resulted on average for the district since the 1984 census. 75 percent of the population of the district is made up of members of the Akan peoples. Substantial parts of the population belong to the Ewe , Volk , Larteh and Cherepon as well as to tribes from the north of Ghana.

The Birim North District consists of two constituencies. In the constituency of Ofoase-Ayirebi, David Oppon-Kusi from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was elected as a direct candidate in the Ghanaian parliament . In the constituency of Abirem, Esther Obeng Dapaah (NPP) became a member of parliament.
