The Birim South District is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana . Chief executive of the 1,070 km² district with 178,459 (2002) inhabitants is Frank M. Bosumtwi . The district capital is Akim Oda . The district was founded in 1989 from the Birim District .

Population and geography

In the district, 70 percent of the population belong to the Akan peoples. Other peoples are the Ewe and the tribes from the north of Ghana. Traditionally, there are tribal areas with a chief in Kotoku, Bosome and Abuakwa in the area of ​​today's district.

So far, eight forest reserves with a total area of ​​190.68 km² have been established in the district. With the name Bemu Block I-III three reserves with a size of 9.6 km² (Bemu Block I), 13.18 km² (Bemu Block II) and 20.90 km² (Bemu Block III) were established. The Birim reserve has a size of 39.29 km², Birim Extension is 21.48 km². With a size of 45.19 km², the Esen Epam reservation is the largest in the district. The Esuboni reserve is 26.70 km², Pra-Birim North has a size of 14.34 km².

The Birim South District consists of two constituencies. Felix Kwasi Owusu-Adjapong of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was elected as a direct candidate in the Ghanaian parliament in the constituency of Akim Swedru . Yaw Osafo-Maafo (NPP) became a member of parliament in the Akim Oda constituency .
