The Akuapim North District (also: Akuapem North or Akapim North or Akwapim North) is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana . Chief executive of the 544 km² district with 104,754 (2002) inhabitants is Edward Adu Aboagye . The district capital is Akropong. This district was formed by decree from the then military dictator Jerry Rawlings from the Akuapim district.

Population and geography

The district extends in a mountainous area and averages between 381 and 488 meters high. The highest point is 500 meters above sea level. Akwapim , after whom the district was named, live in the district. In addition to the 51 percent Akuapim, 42.3 percent of the population are members of the Kyerepong and Larteh (Guan) and 6.1 percent are members of the other peoples of Ghana such as Ewe and peoples of the north. In 2002 there were 104,754 people in the district. According to a census, only 68,247 people lived in the area of ​​today's district in 1970. In 1984 there were already 85,131. Far more women than men of today's population live in the district. For every 100 women in the district, the 2000 census showed only 88 men living in the district.

Estimates for 2006 put the population at 116,699 people.

The Akuapim North District has been divided into two constituencies. Brandford Kwame Daniel Adu from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was elected as a direct candidate in the Ghanaian parliament in the constituency of Okere . For the constituency of Akropong, William Ofori Boafo also entered parliament for the NPP.
