The Akuapim South District (also: Akuapem South or Akapim South or Akwapim South) is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana . Andrew Y. Nyarko-Adu is the chief executive of the 362 km² district with 116,346 (2002) inhabitants . The district capital is Nsawam , which is only 23 km northwest of Accra , on the road to Kumasi .

Population and geography

Most of the population lives in rural areas. Only in the cities of Nsawam (population: 29,986), Adoagyiri (population: 13,058) and Aburi (population: 10,071) live more than 5,000 inhabitants. The town of Aburi is an important tourist destination and internationally known because of the botanical garden that was created here.

In the district traditionally the dominions of the chiefs exist in the Nsawam area in the area between Djankoma, Adamukrom, Oparekrom and Kojokrom. Also the area of ​​Adoagyiri in the area between Amoakrom, Owuraku, Akwamu, Kkfisah, Okanta, Som and Oblegima. Ultimately, the Sakyikrom area consists of the Asante, Kwaku and Fankyeneko areas.

The main drainage system in the district is the Densu , which rises in the Atiwa Mountains near Kibi. The area of ​​the district is 90 percent covered by semi-humid rainforest. The other 10 percent are overgrown with grassland.

In the village of Adamorobe , the Adamorobe sign language has developed a unique sign language. Some of the deaf people in Adamorobe have personal and origin information tattooed on the inside of an arm in case they need help and cannot communicate.

The Akuapim South District consists of one constituency. In the constituency of Aburi-Nsawam, Magnus Opare-Asamoah was elected by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a direct candidate in the Ghanaian parliament .
