The Sekyere East District is one of 138 districts in Ghana . It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and is one of 21 regional districts. The Sekyere West District borders the districts of Sekyere West , Afigya Sekyere , Kwabre , Asante Akim North , Ejisu-Juaben as well as the Sene District in the Brong-Ahafo Region and the Afram Plains District in the Eastern Region . Chief Executive of the 4,516 km² district with approx. 157,378 (2000) inhabitants is Philip Basoa , based in the district capital Effiduase .
The district was established in 1988 together with the Sekyere West district from what was then the Sekyere district.
geography
In the southern part of the district the landscape is characterized by semi-humid rainforest. The northern part, on the other hand, consists mainly of grass savannah. The soils are fertile and well suited for agricultural use.
economy
The predominant economic sector is agriculture. Mainly traditional foods such as cassava , yam , corn, rice, sweet potatoes and plantains are grown . A variety of vegetables are also grown. The conditions in the district are also suitable for the cultivation of export goods such as pineapple , ginger and pepper .
Attractions
In the Sekyere East District lies the Bomfobiri Wildlife Reserve, an important and internationally known national park that is best known for its large number of birds and butterflies. A branch of the Digya National Park also extends into the district. Many mammals live here and safaris are available.
The Bodwease shrine dates back to the 18th century. At the Kumawu Papa Festival, traditions of the Ashanti culture are upheld.
Constituencies
Two constituencies were established in the Sekyere East District. In the constituency of Effiduase-Asokore, Grace Coleman won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2004 general election. Yaw Baah was elected by the NPP for the constituency of Kumawu .
