economy
Due to the urban structure of the district, agriculture plays a subordinate role in the district. Only in the border areas to the neighboring districts is agriculture practiced for the demand for fresh produce for Kumasi and its suburbs.
Industry contributes 30 percent to the district's gross domestic product. Companies for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products, breweries and textile companies are located here.
Small manufacturing companies produce footwear, cosmetics, soaps, furniture, toys and metal products. 50 percent of the available workforce is employed in the wood processing industry.
The district does not have its own raw material mining areas. Building materials and other raw materials for industries are supplied from the surrounding districts.
The service sector generates 60 percent of the gross domestic product. The central market in Kumasi is the largest single market in the whole country. In Kumasi alone, 20 markets are open to the public every day.
