The Asante Akim North District is one of 138 districts in Ghana . It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and is one of 21 regional districts. The Asante Akim North District borders the Asante Akim South , Ejisu Juaben , and Sekyere East districts . The district also borders the Eastern Region and has a direct border with the Kwahu South District . Chief Executive of the 1,462 km² district with approx. 126,465 inhabitants (2004) is George Frimpong .

geography

The Asante Akim North District merges into the Volta Reservoir in the north of its area . The Akwapim-Mampong mountain range rises in the southern edge of the district . A multitude of rivers drain the district. A well-known waterfall is located near Aguoso on the Oyem River.

A large part of the vegetation consists of tropical rainforest, which covers almost the entire Ashanti highlands in which the district is located. Rainforest covers about 575 km² of the district. Due to excessive logging, bushfires, and agricultural slash and burn , the rainforest now consists of secondary rainforest.

economy

The main branch of the economy in the district is agriculture, but it is mainly geared towards subsistence farming . Traditional farming methods such as slash and burn play a major role.

In addition to subsistence farming, the cultivation of export goods is also important for the district. In addition to vegetables for regional trade, cocoa , palm oil , shea nuts and citrus fruits are produced here.

Mineral resources, especially gold deposits, are also economically important. A rich gold deposit extends between the Konongo-Odumase and Juansa area, particularly between Kyekyebiase and Pekyerekye.

The rainforest is a major economic factor for a flourishing timber industry. In particular, the valuable hardwoods are cleared here and exported. Well-known export woods are Wawa , Odum , Ofram , Sanfina , Okyere , Onyina , Kyenken , Otie and Yaya . Some medium-sized companies have already developed in the wood industry.

Infrastructure

In addition to the Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. , with branches in Konongo and Agogo, there is a rural bank in Juansa with branches in Agogo, Odumasi and Konongo.

In the entire district there are 363 roads and a 10 km long railway line around Konongo, which was formerly part of the Kumasi – Accra railway line. 80 percent of the roads are in the southern part of the district.

Others

Near the village of Dwease there are grottos where traditional religious groups celebrate their rituals. There are prehistoric caves near Agogo and Pataban.

A nationally known traditional festival, the Akogya Festival, takes place in Agogo. The Afram Fetish Shrine can also be found in Agogo .

Constituencies

In the Asante Akim North district, only one constituency of the same name was established. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party in the parliamentary elections in 2004. Baah-Wiredu is Minister of Finance and Minister of Economic Planning in the current government under John Agyekum Kufuor .
