The Asante Akim South District is one of 138 districts in Ghana . It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and is one of 21 regional districts. The Asante Akim South District borders the Asante Akim North , Ejisu Juaben , and Amansie East districts . It also borders the Eastern Region and has a direct border with the districts of Kwahu South , Kwahu West and Birim North . Chief Executive of the 1,275 km² district with approx. 96,885 inhabitants (2004) is Lord Justice Gyamfi Fenteng.

geography

The Asante Akim South District is located in the semi-humid rainforest. Due to the important timber industry in the district, the original rainforest is now grassland or secondary forest. In particular, the hardwood species that live in the forests are exported by Ghana's timber industry. Traditional agricultural slash and burn has also made a significant contribution to changing the original forest vegetation.

In Asante Akim South there are relatively constant temperatures throughout the year from an average of 26 degrees Celsius in August to 30 degrees Celsius in March. During the rainy seasons between April and June and between August and October, the majority of the annual rainfall falls between 1500 mm and 1700 mm.

economy

The economy in the district consists essentially of smaller farms, which mostly contribute to the livelihood of the population as part of a subsistence economy .

Due to the fertile soil and the sufficient rainfall, mainly maize, cassava , plantains , cocoa , coffee and palm oil are produced for export and partly for the regional market and various vegetables for the local and regional market.

Gold deposits and diamonds have been found near the villages of Banka , Tokwai , Ofoase , Morso , Kurofa and Asankare and in the Pra river bed . In addition to a grain mill and a rice mill, there are some wood processing companies in the district. Other agricultural products such as palm oil are also processed in smaller businesses.

Five larger market centers serve to distribute the goods. In Obogu there is a market on Tuesdays and Fridays, in Adomfe , Ofoase and Kyempo on Fridays and in Dampong and Juaso on Sundays. The Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. has opened a branch in Juaso, Asante Akim Rural Bank and Mponua Rural Bank have branches in Juaso, Obogu, Asankare and Ofoase.

Infrastructure

There are various paved routes in addition to the main line between Accra and Kumasi , which runs through the district between the villages of Nndadieso and Yawkwei over a length of 26 km. There is a paved stretch of 6 km between Asankare – Bompata and the Juaso – Obogu and Obogu-Ofoase route have recently been expanded.

Landlines are available in Juaso, Obogu, Kurofa, Atwedie, Asankare, Dampong and Morso. The cellular network works in the district capital Juaso and some other places in the district. Post offices have been set up in Juaso, Atwedie, Asankare, Obogu and Bompata.

The main source of energy in Asante Akim South with a share of 84 percent is the use of firewood. Kerosene is also the main source of light. Electricity is available in all major cities in the district. These are Juaso, Obogu, Bompata, Asankare, Atwedie, Asuboa, Nkwanta, Morso, Kurofa, Adomfe, Wankyi, Asante-Akim Praso and Pra-River.

Only in Juaso and Obogu do the population have access to tap water. In Atwidie and Bompata work is being carried out on access to tap water. Some villages have built their own wells or set up public hand pumps for water supply.

Education and health

Spread across the entire district, there are 81 kindergartens, 92 elementary schools, 55 junior secondary schools and three senior secondary schools available to the population . The Senior Secondary Schools have opened in Juaso, Bompata and Ofoase. The Technical / Vocational Training Institute was opened in Asankare.

The district hospital was established in the district capital, Juaso, and ten other health centers were opened in Nnadieso, Bompata, Ofoase, Banka, Dwendase, Banso, Muranaim, Morso, Obogu and Kumeso. A privately operated birth house was opened in Obogu. There are another 85 traditional midwives serving in the district, as well as about 100 local volunteer health workers.

Constituencies

The Asante Akim South district forms a constituency of the same name. In the 2004 parliamentary elections, Gifty Ohene-Konadu won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party .
