The Sekyere West District , now the Mampong Municipal District , is one of more than 138 districts in Ghana . It is located in the center of the country in the Ashanti region and is one of 21 regional districts. The Sekyere West District borders the Ejura / Sekyedumase , Sekyere East , Afigya Sekyere districts and the Sene and Atebubu-Amantin districts in the Brong-Ahafo region . Chief executive over the 2,345 km² district with approx. 143,206 (2000) inhabitants is Haruna Opong-Boateng , based in the district capital Mampong .

geography

The Mampong mountain range , which rises up to 615 meters above sea level, is located in the district. The Afram , Sene , Sasebonso and Chirimfa rivers drain the district.

With its size of 2,345 km², the district covers 9.6 percent of the entire Ashanti region .

population

The Akan peoples make up 92.6 percent of the population of Sekyere West . 0.4 percent belong to the Ewe people , peoples from northern Ghana are also represented with 6.8 percent, another 0.2 percent come from other ethnic groups. 63.7 percent of the approx. 143,206 inhabitants live in smaller villages. 36.3 percent of the population live in urban centers such as Mampong, Kofiase, Nsuta, Kwamang, Beposo and Atonsu. The Sekyere West District is divided into 14 parishes (Area Councils). These communities are Mampong, Nsuta, Beposo, Kwamang, Atonsu, Kofiase, Kyebi, Yonsu, Afigyasombi / Mprim, Adidwan, Asuo-Dida / Amoamang, Benim, Nkwanta and Sekyere West Plains.

Of the total population in 2000, 71,378 men and 71,828 women, so that slightly more women than men live in the district. With a population growth rate of 1.4 percent per year, Sekyere West is well below the national average of 2.7 percent and the regional average in the Ashanti region of 3.4 percent.

The age group between 0 and 15 accounts for 35.5 percent of the population. In 2000, 59.3 percent of the working-age population was between 15 and 64 years old. This corresponds to 84,925 possible employees in the district.

The population density in the Sekyere West District is 61 people per km², well below the regional average of 131 people per km². The national population density of 73 people per km² is also undercut. 87.6 percent are Christians, 10.9 percent Muslim and 1.1 percent followers of traditional religions. Another 0.4 percent are followers of other faiths.

Four important traditional rulers are located in Mampong, Nsuta, Kwamang and Beposo. In Mampong, the Kontonkyi Festival is held in honor of the Paramount Chief resident there on the Siberthron .

economy

The economy in the Sekyere West District is dominated by agriculture, in which 60.8 percent of the workforce is employed. About 17.2 percent of the population work in the service sector, 12.4 percent in trade and sales, and 9.6 percent in industry.

Agriculture

Agriculture is still practiced in the traditional way. The main products of the farms are cassava , corn, yam , plantains , peanuts , onions, tomatoes, carrots, palm oil , citrus fruits and teak from plantations.

The rearing of poultry and other animal species is also part of agricultural production in the district.

Industry

Of the industrial operations, 58 percent are based on the processing of agricultural products from the district. Another 35 percent of industrial companies are active in the wood processing sector. Metalworking companies make up 7 percent of the industrial operations in the district.

Water supply and infrastructure

8.47 percent of the population draws their fresh water from springs, 35.45 percent from rivers and streams - although these watercourses sometimes dry out in the dry season, especially between February and March - and 24.87 percent can use tap water. Among the total population, 27 percent have access to electricity.

Tap water is available in the district capital Mampong and in the surrounding towns. In the rest of the district the population is supplied from wells. Around 10.58 percent of the population have their own water connection in their homes. 89.42 percent of the district's population is supplied from public water sources.

Post offices were set up in Mampong and Nsuta. Smaller post offices were opened in Kwamang, Adidwan, Kyebi, Atonsu, Beposo and Asaam. The Ghana Commercial Bank Ltd. has opened branches in Mampong and Otuasekan. A local bank from Kofiase has opened branches in Mampong. The Kwamaman Rural Bank from Kwamang has branches in Mampong, Nsuta and Beposo, the Nsutaman Rural Bank is based in Nsuta.

The district has weekly markets in Mampong (Wednesday), Kofiase (Friday), Nsuta (Thursday) and Jeduako (Tuesday). Markets are held daily in smaller towns.

The main roads run between Ninting and Aframso. This road is part of the connection between Kumasi and Yeji . There is a total of 47.3 km of paved road between Ninting and Aframso. Another 318.2 km consist of unpaved roads to larger settlements. 144.8 km are poorly developed back roads to the smaller settlements in the district, especially in the Afram Plains.

Education and health

There are 203 schools in the Sekyere West District. There are 122 primary schools (103 public, 19 private), 72 junior secondary schools (68 public, 4 private) and 4 senior secondary schools . A vocational school, two teacher training centers and a university campus are also located in the district.

A state hospital has been set up in Mampong. There are another seven health centers in Asaam, Kofiase, Benim, Kwamang, Birem, Krobo / Dadiese and Nsuta. Three birthing centers are available in Beposo, Birem and Mampong and another five supply facilities have been opened in Mampong, Asaam, Nkuta, Kwamang and Birem.

There are also six private clinics. These are the Catholic Hospital in Oku, the Midwifery Training Institution , the Method Organization in Isaacrom, the Philipa Maternity Home in Mampong, Agroyesum in Nsuta and St. Luke in Asubuasu. The distribution of the health centers in the district remains inaccessible except for two facilities due to the distance of the population in the Afram Mountains ( Afram Plains ).

In January 2002 a total of 252 people were working in the health sector. These included seven doctors (including two assistant doctors), 93 nurses, 115 medical auxiliaries, 15 ward assistants, 16 OR nurses and six medical assistants.

Constituencies

Two constituencies were established in the Kwabre district. In the Nsuta-Kwamang constituency, Kwame Osei-Prempeh won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2004 general election. Peter Abum Sarkodie was elected by the NPP for the constituency of Mampong .
