The National Stadium ( English National Stadium ) in Freetown is the only international sports stadium in Sierra Leone . It is primarily used for soccer games, but also for athletics events. The complex also includes tennis courts and swimming pools.
The National Stadium is home to the Sierra Leonean national soccer teams , the East End Lions , Mighty Blackpool FC , Ports Authority and Kallon FC .
Originally built in 1979 by a Chinese construction company, the stadium was completely refurbished in 2004 and was given its new name. Until then it was known as the " Siaka Stevens Stadium"; this name is still used by the Sierra Leonean Football Association, among others.
Special occurrences
On March 26, 2008, FIFA closed the national stadium of Sierra Leone until further notice. All international matches (including qualifying for the 2010 World Cup ) had to take place in a neutral stadium in a neighboring country. On May 26, 2008, the national stadium was approved by FIFA again.
