The Kasteel Strijthagen ( German  Castle Strijthagen ) is a former aristocratic estate in the area of the municipality of Landgraaf in Dutch Limburg . It is located in the valley of the Strijthagerbeek, a small tributary of the Wurm (river) . The Kasteel is the last mansion in the municipality of Landgraaf that has remained intact in terms of its buildings.

history

The main building of Kasteel Strijthagen, which was built in the 18th century, is located directly on several small ponds that are fed by the Strijthagerbeek. A medieval castle was already on the site . Architecturally striking is the construction, which shows alternating layers of brick and natural stone from the neighboring marl land in the facade . This mix of materials is typical for Limburg and is also known as the Maasland architectural style . It is in a number of older buildings in the area, e.g. B. to be found in the remains of Schaesberg Castle and also in younger buildings.

The castle complex consists of:

  • the main building
  • the upstream, classicist apartment of the rent master
  • the white-paved forecourt from the 17th century, in which later classical elements can also be found
  • the watermill and the so-called koetshuis , both much more recent.

In the course of the 20th century, Kasteel Strijthagen suffered extensive building damage as a result of the directly neighboring coal mining . Three mines were in the immediate vicinity of the complex.

Since 1952 the important Dutch painter and graphic artist Aad de Haas lived with his family for the last two decades of his life in the castle , which was becoming increasingly dilapidated. Only recently, long after the end of mining, the grinding of the collieries, the clearing of many heaps and the restoration of the landscape, the castle as part of the “Mondo Verde” theme park received a new meaning and attention. Above all, however, it was renovated and now serves as an exhibition space and tourist attraction that recalls the Maasland idyll of past centuries.

The neighboring ponds are used by anglers from the HSV Strijthagen fishing club.
