Kasulu is one of the twenty largest cities in Tanzania . It is the second largest city in the Kigoma region and the administrative center of the Kasulu District .

geography

The city is located in the west of Tanzania at 1291 meters above sea level. The climate is tropical, according to the effective climate classification . On average over the year it rains 1184 millimeters with an average temperature of 20.7 degrees Celsius.

history

In 2012, Kasulu was declared a Town Council. Since then, elections to the city council have been held every five years. The chairman of the city council has been Mr. Twallib S.Mangu since 2015.

Population development

The population is growing rapidly, almost doubling every ten years.

Facilities and services

  • Education: In addition to elementary and secondary schools, there are seven colleges in the city. Two are vocational and two are for teacher training. There is also an agricultural school, a nursing school and a tourism school (as of 2016).
  • Health: There are two hospitals, a health center, and 20 pharmacies in the Kasulu Town Council constituency. One hospital is run by the state, one belongs to the Roman Catholic Church . The most common disease is malaria, in 2016 31,000 people fell ill with it and almost 200 died.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: The surrounding area is strongly characterized by agriculture. Corn, cassava, beans, bananas, rice, sweet potatoes and potatoes are grown for personal use. Coffee, ginger, sunflower and sugar cane are intended for sale.
  • Trade: The city is a trade center for the surrounding area as far as Burundi , there are eleven wholesalers and over 700 retailers.
  • Roads: The national road T9, the most important north-south connection in western Tanzania, runs through the city.
  • Airport: In the north of the city there is a small airport with a 1270 meter long runway.

Attractions

  • Cultural center: The cultural center was established in 1978. It shows the cultural assets of the Ha , the largest ethnic group in the city, and offers space for young people to meet.
