As an ecclesiastical institution of the Roman Catholic denomination, the catechetical office is responsible for questions relating to religious instruction , church kindergartens and Catholic private schools.

The work focuses on religious education, confirmation work , media didactics, community education and vicar training . The tasks of the office also include the quality assurance of religious education as well as the creation of good framework conditions, the writing of inspection reports, the assistance in conflict resolution and the legal and organizational advice of directors, teachers and parents. In addition, the office helps to plan staff and collects statistics (for example the development of the number of students in religious education). In advanced training and vocational courses , religion teachers acquire the teaching qualification and ecclesiastical authorization to give religious instruction.
