Katharina Jagiellonica (Montfort)

Katharina Jagiellonica (* 1503 ; † before September 9, 1548, possibly as early as November 1, 1541; Polish Katarzyna Jagiellonka ) was an illegitimate daughter of the Polish King Sigismund I of the Jagiellonian family and his Bohemian mistress Katharina de Thelnicz . As the wife of George III. of Montfort-Bregenz-Pfannberg she was Countess of Montfort .

She had two full siblings, the future bishop Jan de Thelnicz and Regina , who married the Krakow nobleman Hieronim Szafraniec .

Katharina grew up at the Hungarian court, where her uncle Wladyslaw II ruled. In the wake of her cousin Anna , who was about the same age , she took part in the Prince's Day in Vienna in 1515 when she was twelve . Her later husband Georg von Montfort was also one of the participants; however, it is not certain whether the two met at this point in time. The couple eventually married in or shortly thereafter. Previously, the Archbishop Jan Łaski had tried in vain to mediate a marriage between Catherine and the Prince of Moldova Stefan IV . On the other hand, Katharina's cousin Anna, who was now married to the Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand I , had campaigned for the marriage with Montfort . With his support, he probably combined the intention on the one hand to establish even closer ties with the Jagiellonian dynasty and on the other hand to influence the sales negotiations over the rule of Bregenz in the sense of the Habsburgs. Katharina's father, King Sigismund, promised a large dowry, which in the end was not paid in full.

Katharina had with Georg III. five children:

  • Johann VI. († young)
  • Hermann IV., Lord of Bregenz, on Pfannberg and Peggau ⚭ Sarah von Scharffenberg
  • Jakob Hugo I († 1573), Lord of Bregenz, to Peggau and Mannsberg, ⚭ 1553 Katharina von Fugger to Kirchberg and Weißenhorn
  • Franziska ⚭ 1536 Count Gerhard von Manderscheid-Gerolstein
  • Christina († July 1, 1610) ⚭ 1544 Christoph von Losenstein on Schallaburg
