The Katharinenhof (formerly Freight House ) is an office building in Hamburg's old town. It is designed as a corner house with the entrances Zippelhaus 1–2 and Neue Gröningerstraße 2. The building is designated as a cultural monument with the object ID 12407.

Building history

The original building was built according to plans by Hinrich Fittschen in 1890/91. The builders were R. and A. Wallfried. Badly damaged by the war in 1943, the house was initially rudimentarily rebuilt after the war. In 1991–1993 extensive renovation and structural additions to the destroyed parts of the building took place. The architects Daniel Gössler and Schnittger were in charge. The architects deliberately refrained from restoring the added components true to the original. Plastered outer walls and metal profiles for the windows replaced the brick facade from the Wilhelminian era . So the memory of the destruction should be preserved.

description

The 6-storey house (with ground floor and attic) adapts to the course of the street corner Zippelhaus / Neue Gröningerstraße. At the two points where the facade is angled, there are bay-like projections that run through the upper floors to the top floor. The one on the left stands out particularly clearly and has an almost tower-like character.

At the top left, the contemporary design of the supplemented components becomes clear (see above), otherwise the building shows a continuous Wilhelminian style facade in the neo-renaissance style . The predominant feature is exposed brickwork, which is structured by a grid of ribbons, window frames and cornices made of light sandstone .

A band of terracotta panels runs between the second and third floors . In addition to ornamental forms, they also show figurative motifs on the subjects of warehousing, shipping and construction.
