history

Around 1300, when the market was founded, the first chapel was built on the site of the current building . The choir was probably built around 1400. The church was damaged in a fire in 1763 and then renovated. In 1788 the church was profaned and apartments were set up in the nave. Today (as of 2012) the bell tower belongs to the diocese of Graz-Seckau . In March 2012, a vote was taken in Frohnleiten about the restoration and further use of the former church. With a low turnout, the community citizens decided to renovate by 250,000 euros and keep the church in community ownership.

At the end of July 2012, an attached component located between the former church and the tower was demolished due to the risk of collapse. In mid-October 2013, the renovation work on the facade was completed. The costs amounted to around 300,000 euros.

Building description for the Katharinenkirche

The former, early Gothic church is only preserved as a structure. The free-standing bell tower and former defense tower in the west has a Gothic basement with a pentagonal floor plan. The six-sided tower stands on it. He has an onion helmet with a lantern from the second half of the 17th century. The choir with a five-eighth end and stepped buttresses is easily recognizable.
