The Cathedral of St. Mary Queen ( Romanian Catedrala Sfânta Fecioară Maria Regină ) in the Romanian city of Iași ( Jassy , Moldova region ) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Iași . The church, consecrated on November 1st, 2005 , is located in the immediate vicinity of the former cathedral of St. Mary's Assumption from the 18th century.

history

Over the centuries, Iași has been the seat of Roman Catholic bishops with various canonical positions and jurisdiction over the centuries . The Assumption Cathedral was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and, after the final establishment of the diocese in 1884, was fundamentally restored and expanded. Despite massive repression by the communist regime, it was no longer sufficient for the diocese and local parish, and a new building has been planned since the earthquake of 1977 , in which it suffered severe damage. Realization was only possible with the end of communism in 1990. The foundation stone was laid in 1992.

Architecture and equipment

The Maria-Queen-Cathedral is a central building on a circular floor plan with an outer diameter of 38 m. It is vaulted by a flat dome, which is surrounded by 24 triangular dormer windows , giving the impression of a crown . On the top of the dome stands a slender, cross-crowned roof turret , which is surrounded by eight dormer windows.

Inside, too, the symbol number 24 with its dividers 12, 8, 4 and 3 plays a key role in the design, for example in the number of struts and columns, the galleries and windows and the floor design. A large-scale mosaic on the altar screen shows the increased Virgin Mary , surrounded by angels. The themes of the stained glass windows are creation, redemption, and the seven sacraments . The central chandelier is designed as a mirror image of the dome.

The cathedral can seat around 1,000 people , including the galleries . Together with the old church, the diocesan buildings and the surrounding open spaces, it forms an ensemble that also allows the liturgical celebration in the open air on special occasions.
