Ambato Cathedral

The Cathedral of Ambato or the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Exaltation ( Spanish Basílica Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Elevación ) is a Roman Catholic church in Ambato , Tungurahua Province , Ecuador . The cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Ambato and also has the title of a minor basilica , it is consecrated to Mary , the Mother of God .

history

The original church dates from 1698 and was destroyed by the 1797 earthquake. The subsequent new building was raised in 1948 to the cathedral of the newly created diocese of Ambato. The following year, 1949, an earthquake destroyed the cathedral. In 1954 the current cathedral was consecrated. In 1961, Pope John XXIII gave the church . awarded the additional title of a minor basilica .

The modern structure at Park Juan Montalvo consists largely of concrete. The structure of the single-nave cruciform church is characterized by the crossing dome with its high tambour , which rises from the vaulted ceiling, and the light bell tower above the main entrance. The drum and outer walls are designed with tall lead glass windows. The marble altar and various wood carvings are significant among the furnishings. So the wooden church doors and the figures of the Sorrowful Mother of God, the Immaculate Virgin and John the Baptist. It is named after the representation of Nuestra Señora de la Elevación as the patroness of the diocese. In the blue apse above the altar cross there is a larger than life bronze statue of the Virgin Mary.
