history

In front of today's cathedral there were previous churches, but their construction was not permanent, in 1736 the demolition of the last one was decided and the construction of the current one began. Its consecration is said to have taken place between 1761 and 1765. Minor changes were made at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

It was in this cathedral that the new Argentine flag was blessed by Manuel Belgrano on May 25, 1812. Afterwards the troops of the War of Independence and the people of the city swore an oath to the Cabildo. This fact is now immortalized in a painting by Luis De Servi, which was placed on one of the walls of the cathedral to mark the 100th anniversary of the event. In the cathedral, the statue of Nuestra Señora del Rosario by Paypaya and Río Blanco is venerated, declared captain of the armies of the north in 1812 and who fought for the liberation of the country.

With the creation of the Diocese of Jujuy, the church was elevated to a cathedral in 1934. In 1973 the cathedral was given by Pope Paul VI. additionally awarded the title of a minor basilica.

Furnishing

Interior with a view of the altar and pulpit

A peculiarity of the interior is the vaulted wooden ceiling painted with ornaments. The cathedral houses a variety of works of art. Special value is given to the pulpit , which was traditionally designed by the Indians of the Jesuit missions in the region. The family tree from the Bible to Jesus Christ, Jacob's ladder , the four evangelists , etc. are depicted in the form of reliefs . The style lies between Baroque and Plateresque , whereby the somewhat naive and primitive representations of the figures are typical of the work of the indigenous craftsmen. The pulpit is made of Ñandubay and cedar wood. The gold leaf is impressive despite its browning.

The sculpture of the Reclining Christ, attributed to the Spanish sculptor Juan Martínez Montañés , is one of the most important in the country. The monstrance made of silver, emeralds and gold is characterized by very fine details. The cathedral also has a fine collection of leading artists from the Cusco school .
