Kathleen Mary Drew-Baker (born November 6, 1901 in Leigh ; died 1957 in Manchester ) was a British algologist . Her research into the life cycle of the red alga Porphyra umbilicalis led to the breakthrough in the commercial use of nori in Japan.

Drew Baker discovered that the hitherto regarded as a separate genus microscopic red algae Conchocelis the diploid stage of the so far only haploid known Porphyra is. Their research was soon replicated by the Japanese algologist Sokichi Segawa. Based on their work, from 1953 Fusao Ota and other Japanese marine biologists developed artificial sowing techniques. This led to an improvement in nori cultivation, which had previously been impaired by unpredictable crop yields, and thus enabled large-scale commercial use.

In honor of Kathleen Drew-Baker, who is also known as the mother of the sea , a festival takes place on April 14th at her monument erected in Uto in 1963 .

Kathleen Drew-Baker received a biology scholarship from the University of Manchester and graduated there with honors in 1922. Between 1922 and 1957 she taught and researched at the Institute of Botany at the University of Manchester. From 1924 she worked on a research fellowship at Berkeley College, University of California . On her return, she married Henry Wright-Baker in 1928. Due to her marriage, she was discharged from the university, but was able to continue working as an Honorary Research Fellow thanks to an Ashburne Hall grant .

She was a co-founder of the British Phycological Society and its first president.
